R and I (Remove and Install)

Sometimes parts need to be removed to gain access to repair or replace damaged ones, or to facilitate repair of the part itself. The part which is removed is reinstalled on your vehicle.

R-12

Environmentally hazardous refrigerant once used in most automobile air-conditioning (A/C) systems.

R-134A

An environmentally safe refrigerant now used in air-conditioning (A/C) Systems.

Race

The surface on the inner or outer ring of a bearing on which the balls, needles or rollers move.

Rack-and-pinion Steering

A steering system having a pinion gear at the lower end of the steering column that engages a rack or a toothed rod that connects to the wheel steering arms. The ends of the rack are linked to the steered wheels with tie rods. When the gear is rotated by the steering shaft, it moves the rack from side to side: turning the wheels.

Radial Ply

A tire in which the fabric cords run radially in a line from the wheel hub or straight out from the bead or around the tubular shape of the tire. Annular belts of fabric or steel mesh add rigidity. Advantages of this design are more flexible side walls with a relatively stiff tread area and a larger and more consistent footprint on the road under all driving conditions.

Radiator

The radiator is the central component of the cooling system. It takes the heat from the engine and coolant and passes it to the surrounding air, which then cools the engine.

Radiator Cap

The radiator cap maintains a specific pressure in the cooling system so it operates efficiently.

Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)

The rear wheels receive all the engine power. RWD is preferred over front-wheel drive (FWD) for its superior handling and acceleration capabilities. RWD provides less traction than FWD in poor road conditions because less weight is available over the drive wheels.

Rebound

The motion of a wheel that extends the suspension. The opposite of 'jounce'.

Rebuild

To repair or replace any worn or defective part(s) of an automotive component, such as an engine.

Receiver Dryer

The high side of an air-conditioning system. It removes moisture from the air and stores refrigerant. Also see Accumulator.

Reciprocating Motion

Of an object between two limiting positions. Applied to piston engines because of the limited up and down motion of the pistons.

Recirculating-ball

A steering mechanism in which the steering shaft turns a worm gear that, in turn, causes a toothed metal block to move back and forth. Ball bearings in a recirculating track reduce friction between the worm gear and the block. As the block moves, its teeth rotate a gear connected to a steering arm, which then moves the steering linkage.

Redline

The maximum recommended revolutions per minute for an engine. In cars equipped with a tachometer: an instrument that measures engine rpm: the redline is usually indicated by, surprisingly enough, a red line. Some tachometers mark the redline with a colored sector. Others have two lines: the lower one marking the maximum allowable sustained engine rpm, the higher line indicating the absolute maximum rpm.

Refrigerant

Chemical compounds that absorb, carry, and release heat from an air-conditioning (A/C) system.

Registration

Motor vehicle ownership that is filed with the province/state.

Regulator

A device which maintains the amperage and/or voltage levels of a circuit at predetermined values.

Relay

A relay is like an automatic switch. When power is applied to a relay, an internal switch closes, completing a circuit.

Remanufacture

To replace all wearing parts, gaskets, and seals and make sure all other components are within manufacturer's specifications.
